Instead, he sees investors “just buying, buying, buying” as a form of diversification. According to Nadid, investors are looking to broaden their exposure in an election year to absorb potential volatility.
The Small-Cap Trade
Nadig’s perspective on the sustainability of the small-cap trade remains uncertain. He suggests that if there is a sustained rally in small caps for a few months, with consistent outperformance compared to large caps, then more investors are likely to jump on the bandwagon. However, if the current trend is just a re-diversification trade, we can expect the small-cap market to remain relatively stable for the rest of the year. The Russell 2000 index, tracking small caps, experienced a slight decrease on Friday but managed to outperform other major indices, ending the week with a nearly 2% gain. Over the past month, the index has risen by almost 8%, although it has remained relatively flat since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.

Anna Paglia, who develops global ETF strategies for State Street Global Advisors, believes that expectations for interest rate cuts are driving strength in sector laggards. She points out that investors are becoming more comfortable with risk, which is expected to generate momentum in the market. However, Paglia dismisses the idea that investors are withdrawing from money market accounts, as most of the money is considered “sticky” and unlikely to be pulled out hastily. In her view, investors hold onto cash for specific reasons, making it less likely for a massive wave of cash to exit the market.
