Warren Buffett, the legendary investor known for his successful stock picks, recently unveiled his latest investment strategy by revealing Chubb as his secret stock pick. Berkshire Hathaway, his conglomerate, made a significant purchase of nearly 26 million shares of the Zurich-based insurer, Chubb, amounting to a stake worth $6.7 billion. This investment catapulted Chubb to become Berkshire’s ninth largest holding by the end of March.
Following the news of Berkshire’s stake in Chubb, the shares of the property and casualty insurer surged by almost 7% in extended trading. This positive momentum contributed to Chubb’s overall performance in the market, with the stock gaining approximately 12% year to date. It’s worth noting that Chubb had previously been acquired by Ace Limited in 2016 for a significant amount of $29.5 billion, resulting in the combined company adopting the Chubb name.
Berkshire Hathaway, based in Omaha, has established a strong presence in the insurance industry, with a portfolio that includes auto insurer Geico, reinsurance giant General Re, and various home and life insurance services. Notably, Berkshire also made a notable acquisition of insurance company Alleghany for $11.6 billion in 2022. Furthermore, Berkshire recently divested its positions in Markel and Globe Life, further solidifying its focus on strategic investments in the insurance sector.
Surprisingly, Berkshire kept its purchase of Chubb under wraps for two consecutive quarters, obtaining confidential treatment to withhold details of its stock holdings. This secretive approach was highly unusual for Berkshire, with the last instance being in 2020 when it acquired Chevron and Verizon. The decision to keep the investment confidential sparked speculation among analysts and investors, with many assuming it could be a bank stock given Berkshire’s increased cost basis for “banks, insurance, and finance” equity holdings.
Warren Buffett’s revelation of Chubb as his secret stock pick sheds light on his strategic investment decisions and further underscores Berkshire Hathaway’s influence in the insurance industry. This latest move showcases Buffett’s knack for identifying lucrative opportunities and reinforces his reputation as one of the most successful investors of our time.
