Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” have officially joined the prestigious billion-dollar club in the world of animated features. Surpassing $1.014 billion in global box office revenue, the film has not only become the highest-grossing film of 2024 but also the first animated movie since “Barbie” from Warner Bros. to achieve this remarkable milestone. This success has been praised by Michael O’Leary, the president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, who commended the film for reaching $1 billion faster than any other animated movie in history.
The billion-dollar achievement of “Inside Out 2” serves as a significant win for Disney’s Pixar animation studio, which has faced challenges at the box office in recent years, especially during the pandemic. With several animated features being directly released on Disney+ instead of theaters, Pixar struggled to replicate its past successes. Prior to “Inside Out 2,” no Pixar or Walt Disney Animation studio film had surpassed $480 million in global box office revenue since 2019. However, this latest installment has reignited Pixar’s box office potential.
One of the key factors contributing to the success of “Inside Out 2” was its appeal to family audiences. Data from EntTelligence revealed that more than 70% of the film’s domestic audience consisted of families, highlighting the significant influence of this demographic on box office performance. This underserved audience segment played a crucial role in driving the film’s success, especially when there were limited family-oriented movie options available in theaters until the release of recent titles like “The Garfield Movie” and “IF.”
In addition to families, “Inside Out 2” also managed to capture the attention of teenage moviegoers, with 14% of its audience belonging to the 13 to 17 age group. This demographic, which had been relatively absent from the box office in recent years, represents the future of the movie industry and holds significant importance for studios and theater operators. The film’s ability to engage both family and teenage audiences underscores its broad appeal and box office impact.
As “Inside Out 2” continues to make waves at the global box office, the industry is eagerly anticipating the release of upcoming family-friendly titles like Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4.” Scheduled to hit theaters during the July Fourth holiday weekend, this film represents the next opportunity to attract family and teen viewers and build on the momentum generated by successful animated features like “Inside Out 2.” With the proven power of engaging storytelling and appealing to diverse audience segments, the future looks bright for animated films in the evolving landscape of cinema.
