Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service, Max, has recently announced price increases for its ad-free options. The ad-free plan will now cost $16.99 per month, while the yearly ad-free plan will be priced at $169.99. Additionally, the ultimate ad-free plan will increase to $20.99 per month and $209.99 per year. The ad-supported option will remain at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Existing subscribers will see the price hike starting from their next billing cycle on or after July 4.

The decision to raise prices comes only days before the highly anticipated second season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon.” The series premiere of “House of the Dragon” garnered close to 10 million viewers, marking it as the biggest debut in HBO’s history. Warner Bros. Discovery is aiming to capitalize on the success of the show by increasing prices on its streaming platform.

The price hike by Warner Bros. Discovery is part of a larger trend in the streaming industry. Competitors like Disney, Comcast’s NBCUniversal, and Netflix have also implemented price increases in recent months. Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced a bundle that includes Disney+, Max, and Hulu, offered in both ad-supported and ad-free tiers.

Despite adding two million direct-to-consumer streaming subscribers in the first quarter, Warner Bros. Discovery missed revenue targets. CEO David Zaslav has emphasized the importance of retaining subscribers through discounted bundles to offset potential losses. Zaslav sees customer retention as crucial to the success of the streaming business.

Investment in Content and User Experience

This marks only the second time that Max has raised prices for its ad-free service since its launch. The previous price increase in early 2023 was aimed at enhancing content and user experience. The latest price hike is also expected to contribute to continued investments in content quality and service improvements.
