The release of Beyoncé’s latest album, “Cowboy Carter,” has sparked a resurgence in sales of Western boots. According to consumer behavior firm Circana, sales of Western boots increased by more than 20% in the week following the album’s release. This surge in sales is good news for companies producing Western-style footwear and other items that fit the Wild West aesthetic.
Beyoncé’s venture into the country genre with “Cowboy Carter” aligns with a larger cultural trend towards Western-inspired fashion. With the release of singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” prior to the album launch, there was already a notable uptick in sales of cowboy boots. This cultural support for stagecoach-inspired styles is further exemplified by Louis Vuitton’s American Western line introduced at Paris Fashion Week, as well as attendees at the Eras Tour channeling a country aesthetic reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s earlier days.
The impact of Beyoncé’s chart-topping album extends beyond just music, influencing retail trends as well. Analysts like Sam Poser from Williams suggest that Beyoncé’s album could drive an increase in same-store sales and attract more female shoppers to stores like Boot Barn. As a result, Poser upgraded his rating on Boot Barn to buy and raised his price target, anticipating a 12% upside. The beginning of rodeo and music festival seasons further contribute to this positive trend, with expectations of exceeding Wall Street consensus estimates for the current quarter and full fiscal year.
While cowboy boots may be a staple of Western fashion, other items like denim are also experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Levi Strauss CEO Michelle Gass highlighted the brand’s focus on remaining at the center of cultural trends, noting the impact of “Levii’s Jeans,” a song featured on Beyoncé’s album with Post Malone. Gass emphasized that denim is currently “having a moment,” with Western style trends gaining traction in both fashion and music.
Despite the overall market pullback, Boot Barn shares have climbed over 4% since the beginning of April, contributing to a 30% increase since the start of the year. On the other hand, Levi Strauss shares have slightly declined in April, reflecting market fluctuations affecting denim suppliers like Kontoor Brands. However, the overall trend points towards a growing interest in Western-inspired fashion due to cultural influences like Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” album.
Beyoncé’s venture into the country genre with “Cowboy Carter” has not only revitalized interest in Western fashion but has also influenced retail trends and cultural perceptions of the Western aesthetic. As music and fashion continue to intersect, the impact of artists like Beyoncé on consumer behavior and market trends becomes increasingly evident. The surge in sales of Western boots and denim products following the release of Beyoncé’s album serves as a testament to the power of cultural icons in shaping consumer preferences and driving retail success.
